A downloadable game

Inspired by the viral hit Wordle, this provides the game you know and love for your Playdate!

Features include:

  • daily puzzle, daily archive, and shuffle game modes!
  • stat tracking
  • dark mode
  • two keyboard layouts
  • save/resume functionality so you can take your time playing throughout the day

This project is not affiliated with Josh Wardle or the New York Times. This project is using the same word list as the current NYT version of the game though.

Please message me with any comments, thoughts, or bugs!

I realize this is a 2 year old project, but is the Playdate scrolling keyboard not able to be plugged in here?

There seems to be a mismatch between today’s actual word and the word used in this game now! (If there’s any chance you’d open up the source I’d love to look into it just FYI)

Sorry for the late reply - The NYT started a new format for how they host the words-of-the-day, and I haven't yet gotten around to consuming it and packaging it in-app. I'm also not sure how far in the future the words are set at the moment.

This app is still using the Wordlist from before the format change, ~May 9, 2022.

Appreciate you letting me know, hope you can enjoy the app despite the difference!

Ahhh neat! I’ll have to look into that myself as well 😊

I’ll gladly enjoy this one still since it just gives me an excuse to play a second time

Very nice game!

Would it be possible to add support for other languages (e.g. Spanish letters like "Ñ", "Á", "É", etc.)? ...so we can change the word lists and use something different than english.

I was thinking about making a wordle game for playdate with support for different languages and word lists, but finding this one makes me wonder if it is worth the effort to write something from scratch when your game is very well finished and polished.

Sorry for the late reply!

Custom wordlists is an awesome idea! I'll think about how that could work and see if that could make it into a future update!

Word date is at 2:19.

I saw in the comments below that this has the same words as the NYT version!?

I did have a lot of fun being a Worlde noob messing around was successful in guessing the word. Will keep returning to this that's for sure!

Well done, this has become my preferred way to play the word every day!

Would love to have the ability to play through the full archive of previous words, but idk if that’s an easy thing to implement. Thanks for your work on this!

Thank you! I'm working on adding an archive / replay functionality. Stay tuned!

That would be rad, thanks! Is there a way I can send you a few bucks? Would love to support your work!

I was trying to figure out how to donate as well, so I ended up choosing the "name your price" option on their other app here! https://bobbykaz.itch.io/play-timer

Thanks for your support!

First of all, I just want you to know this is the only way I play this game for quite awhile and love this version immensely!

Second of all, is there a way I can donate for your work? I'm not too familiar with itch.io outside of playdate stuff so I apologize if that's a dumb question.

Thirdly, if we could do one step further and make this an archival shuffle mode of all previous days' words where you could just endlessly play, that would be amazing

A Shuffle mode is a great idea! I will add that in alongside the Archive mode.

A full Archive of past Daily puzzles, plus a Shuffle mode are available in my latest release!

Yesssssss, I love this so much! Thank you :D

Nice! Thank you! Works well.
Something that would be a nice to have would be a function that lets you autofill correct letters from previous to next guess (if you want to.)

how did you link the game to the NYT version!? that’s soo cool

The full wordlist for the original Wordle and NYT verson is available in those webpages' source code - anyone can view it with the "View Source" option from your browser!

oh wow that’s so cool thanks!!

Thanks for adding the keyboard UI. Definitely takes the game from good to great.

Do I need to download the new file and sideload it or can the old one update?

(+1)

You will still have to side load the new file - the system and side load webpage will recognize it as an update to the current game then.

As far as I know there is not yet a way to trigger an automatic update to everyone who has ever downloaded a version of a 3rd party game like this.

Thanks for the comments!

This is a really good start.

A couple of pieces of feedback:

- The shading on misplaced letters is hard to see because it's so light. I recommend making it darker.

- Wordle shades the keys on the keyboard according to whether they're correct/incorrect guesses, or not used yet. Doing that here would be really great.

Thanks for the feedback!
Changing the keyboard to eliminate/indicate guesses is definitely on my list of things to do next.

I appreciate that you think the shading on misplaced letters isn't clear enough, I can totally try to make that a little better. I was trying to balance something simple to implement that also didn't interfere too much with the drawn letter in the box; making it better is worth additional complexity for sure now!

The shading on misplaced letters has been adjusted to hopefully be clearer!

Still working on the shading on the keyboard itself.
